False Memories in Children and Adults: Age, Distinctiveness, and Subjective Experience.
Ghetti, Simona; Qin, Jianjian; Goodman, Gail S.
Developmental Psychology, v38 n5 p705-18 Sep 2002
Investigated developmental trends associated with the Deese/Roediger-McDermott false-memory effect, the role of distinctive information, and subjective experience of true/false memories. Found that 5-year-olds recalled more false memories than adults but no age differences in recognition of critical lures. Distinctive information reduced false memory at all ages. Five-year-olds provided with distinctive information, and 7-year-olds and adults, regardless of viewing distinctive information, expressed higher confidence in true than in false memories.
