Examines the relationship between students' quality of effort (involvement), institutional environment, and students' reported educational gains from their experiences at two predominantly Black (PBLAIs) and two predominately White (PWLAIs) private liberal arts institutions. Black students at PBLAIs benefited to a greater degree from their involvement compared to Black students at PWLAIs. (Contains 27 references and 1 table.) (GCP)
