The Emergence of Homegrown Stereotypes.
Prentice, Deborah A.; Miller, Dale T.
American Psychologist, v57 n5 p352-59 May 2002
Develops the concept of homegrown stereotypes, a distinct class of in-group stereotypes, locating their origin in self-presentation processes. Discusses the accuracy of these stereotypes and considers their similarities to and differences from various related phenomena. An examination of homegrown stereotypes highlights the importance of considering the impact of in-group, as well as intergroup, dynamics on the production of stereotypes. (SM)
