Fairness or Stereotypes? Young Children's Priorities When Evaluating Group Exclusion and Inclusion.
Killen, Melanie; Pisacane, Kerry; Lee-Kim, Jennie; Ardila-Rey, Alicia
Developmental Psychology, v37 n5 p587-96 Sep 2001
Interviewed preschoolers about straightforward exclusion and inclusion for two gender stereotypic peer-group contexts: activities and role-play. Found that all children evaluated straightforward exclusion based on gender as wrong and used moral reasons. Preliminary inclusion decisions in the activity contexts were based on stereotypic expectations, particularly for younger children. However, all gave priority to fairness in multifaceted inclusion peer-group contexts. (Author/KB)
