Can Individuals with Down Syndrome Acquire Alphabetic Literacy Skills in the Absence of Phoneme Awareness?
Cardoso-Martins, Claudia; Frith, Uta
Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, v14 n3-4 p361-75 Jun 2001
Reports two studies investigating the relationship between phoneme awareness and word reading ability in Down syndrome (DS) subjects. Finds that the results question that phoneme awareness is not related to alphabetic reading acquisition in DS. Concludes that the ability to detect phonemic similarities in words significantly differentiated between readers and nonreaders. (SG)
