Parenting among Low-Income, African American Single Mothers with Preschool-Age Children: Patterns, Predictors, and Developmental Correlates.
McGroder, Sharon M.
Child Development, v71 n3 p752-71 May-Jun 2000
Examined dimensions and patterns of parenting among 193 low-income African American single mothers with preschoolers. Identified four parenting patterns (aggravated but nurturant, cognitively stimulating, patient and nurturant, and low nurturance). Found that maternal well-being and sociodemographic characteristics accounted for 93 percent of between-parenting groups variability. Children's cognitive school readiness and personal maturity were related to parenting pattern. (Author/KB)
