Family Structure, Parental Perceptions, and Child Labor in Kenya: What Factors Determine Who Is Enrolled in School?
Buchmann, Claudia
Social Forces, v78 n4 p1349-78 Jun 2000
Analysis of household survey data in Kenya revealed that children's enrollment in school was affected by parents' expectations for future financial help from children and (for girls) by parents' perceptions of labor market discrimination against women, but not by patriarchal norms or child labor. The results challenge traditional explanations of educational inequality in less industrialized societies. (Contains 69 references.) (Author/SV)
