The most important decisions in extending utility and power of computing and telecommunications to delivery of scholarly information are the adoption of standards and protocols which ensure that the issues of migration, and refreshing of electronic information are as straightforward and routine as possible. Standard generalized markup language (SGML) and related standards (LC, MARC, EAD-encoded archival description) are discussed. (Author/AEF)
