Electronic publishing can best be understood as a cluster of related innovations which can be incorporated in different combinations. The innovation cluster is defined, and a framework is provided to characterize several recent publishing ventures demonstrating how the framework facilitates comparison and evaluation of individual implementations of electronic publishing ventures.
