Problem-Based Learning and Performance-Based Testing: Effective Alternatives for Undergraduate Surgical Education and Assessment of Student Performance.
Schwartz, Richard W.; And Others
Medical Teacher, v19 n1 p19-23 Mar 1997
Reports on the positive results obtained from the University of Kentucky's newly installed undergraduate performance-based learning (PBL) surgery clerkship. Favorable results include the PBL students' performance surpassing that of students in lecture-based instruction, and PBL students performing significantly better in the clinical applications of knowledge. Performance-based testing also provides a more accurate assessment of student learning. (AIM)
