The Effect of Hearing Similar-Sounding Words on Young 2-Year-Olds' Disambiguation of Novel Noun Reference.
Merriman, William E.; Marazita, John M.
Developmental Psychology, v31 n6 p973-84 Nov 1995
Three experiments examined disambiguation effect, the attachment of novel nouns to unfamiliar objects, and the effect of preexposure to similar sounding words in 2-year olds. Preexposure was found to alter subjects' disambiguation of novel nouns, attesting to the importance of phonological working memory in toddlers' decisions about the likely reference of unfamiliar names.
