Schooling for Some: Child Labor and School Enrollment of Black and White Children in the Early Twentieth-Century South.
Walters, Pamela Barnhouse; James, David R.
American Sociological Review, v57 n5 p635-50 Oct 1992
Data from North Carolina and South Carolina in 1910 indicate that racially segregated labor markets and racially unequal school systems affected school enrollment of African-American and white children. Research focusing on the textile industry suggests that school enrollment expansion was constrained by limited availability of educational opportunities. (SLD)
