Bias in the Counseling Process: How to Recognize and Avoid It.
Morrow, Kelly A.; Deidan, Cecilia T.
Journal of Counseling and Development, v70 n5 p571-77 May-Jun 1992
Notes that counselors' vulnerability to inferential bias during counseling process may result in misdiagnosis and improper interventions. Discusses these inferential biases: availability and representativeness heuristics; fundamental attribution error; anchoring, prior knowledge, and labeling; confirmatory hypothesis testing; and reconstructive memory. Illustrates each bias through fictitious case vignettes. Suggests ways for counselors to avoid biases. (Author/NB)
