Examined influence of same-sex and cross-sex parent-child relationships on male (winning/achievement) and female (fair play/participation) orientation toward sports. Both mother-son and father-daughter relationships were found to be associated with more traditional female sport orientation in boys and girls, respectively. Explains why parents reinforce sex-linked orientations in daughters but not sons. (CMG)
