In contrast to the traditional psychoanalytical approach, the developmental approach to dealing with parental reactions to the birth of a handicapped child offers greater support and allows for an evolution of parent roles. Further, the developmental approach can free parents to act as agents for changing social views toward "deviant" individuals. (CL)
