The concept of a self-renewing library (a library of limited size in which, beyond a certain point, material would be reduced at a rate related to the rate of acquisitions) is described as a possible solution to meet Britain's future needs for university library development. Reactions to and problems with implementing such libraries are discussed. (VT)
