Responding through Listening: Promoting Listening Skills through Lightning Talks and 2x2x2 Storytelling
Elizabeth L. Angeli
Journal of Response to Writing, v10 n2 Article 3 p30-48 2024
This article focuses on listening not as cognition and comprehension but as a way of being attuned to self and others. The author follows Patrick Sullivan's (2014) pedagogy of listening, which establishes "listening, empathy, and reflection as the primary values in the classroom" (p. 7). These values promote "embracing respect for uncertainty and complexity" and require "students to engage assigned readings and ideas dialogically and collaboratively" (Sullivan, 2014, p. 7). Sullivan's call echoes what Paul Rankin (1928) wrote 86 years earlier in his article in The English Journal: "There are four language arts: the two expressional ones, speaking and writing; and the two understanding ones, listening and reading" (p. 623). Listening supports understanding, but it goes beyond comprehension. Writing instructors respond to writing often through listening in class and conferences, making listening a form of response instructors teach and model for students, intentionally or not. As such, writing instructors would do well to consider how to teach listening skills alongside writing skills. This article discusses the use of Lightning Talks and the 2x2x2 storytelling method in a university course to teach listening skills.
