Generative AI and Academic Research: A Review of the Policies from Selected HEIs
Higher Education for the Future, v12 n1 p97-113 2025
The article is an exploratory study assessing the stance selected higher education institutes (HEIs) have adopted regarding the usage of generative artificial intelligence (AI) applications in academic research. The HEIs are selected based on purposive sampling in order to showcase different stances they have adopted to curb plagiarism and uphold academic integrity. The article also takes into account the approach of some of the major publishers towards the use of generative AI technologies and the methods in which this usage is cited in academic research. Citing them as authors or in acknowledgement sections equates them to humans but without any liability of ethical conduct towards research, thus impacting academic integrity. The discussion finds its theoretical background in the eight themes of anthropology of technology. Ingold (1997) has identified in which society accepts any new technologies. The article concludes with some common questions for further research that were identified based on the common observations in the policies of HEIs, which are mostly updated on their websites.
