Sketching the Contours of Belonging after College Student Trauma
Tricia R. Shalka; Fatima Abou Nassif Mourad
Journal of College Student Development, v65 n5 p527-542 2024
This hermeneutic and post-intentional phenomenological study explored how trauma experiences affected sense of belonging for undergraduate students. Results suggest five salient textures of belonging after trauma, including silence, validation, isolation, compassion, and betrayal. Implications for student affairs practice are presented to frame the importance of proactive measures prior to college students' experiences of trauma as mechanisms to foster belonging and effective support for students who have experienced trauma.
