Parenting Styles and Mental Wellbeing in University Students in Extremadura

Introduction: The aim of this study is to identify which parenting styles are associated with optimal outcomes for in the psychological wellbeing of university students in Extremadura. The participants were 400 students from Extremadura, aged between 18 and 30, 80% of whom were women and 20% men. Parenting styles were divided into three categories following Darling and Steinberg: involvement, psychological autonomy and behavioural strictness. Psychological wellbeing was classified into six categories following Ryff: positive relations with others, self-acceptance, personal growth, purpose in life, environmental mastery, and autonomy. Method: Regression analysis and discriminant analysis were performed to test the associations between the parenting styles experienced by students and their psychological wellbeing. Results: The results show direct significant relationships between parenting styles and psychological wellbeing. Discussion or Conclusion: Involved parenting was associated with a higher level of psychological wellbeing in young people. On the other hand, no significant relationships were found between behavioural strictness and psychological wellbeing
