In this article, we introduce the notion of "motion simulation hinge" and discuss its role in mental simulation of previously-experienced motion events and also mental simulation of scientific concepts in terms of motion events. Motion simulation hinge is defined as a static imaginary object or area around which or relative to which a motion event is mentally simulated. We suggest that motion simulation hinge can enhance inhibition and working memory as two components of executive functions. Motion simulation hinge contributes to the processes of focusing on key information of a motion event, disregarding unnecessary/irrelevant information, and enhancing inhibition as a component of executive functions. It also keeps the necessary information active and allows the individual to manipulate information during the process of motion simulation. Through this process, it enhances working memory as another component of executive functions. Finally, we discuss the role of motion simulation hinge in rapid or automatic activation of motion simulations that have been established in the cognitive system. Our proposal offers a picture of the role of inhibition and working memory in the process of automatic simulation of motion events.
