Trans Epistemicide and the Implications for Education
Diana Kuhl
Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education, v45 n5-6 p614-633 2024
This paper argues that the epistemic is not separate from the material, and the depth and scope, of harm enacted against Trans people can be conceptualized as a Trans epistemicide. It makes clear that colonization, the psy disciplines, and education are imbricated systems wherein multiple forms of epistemic injustice and epistemological violence coalesce to delegitimate and extinguish knowledges of gender diversity that do not align with the dominant epistemic and social order; predominantly positivist/post-positivist, white, patriarchal, colonial worldviews, and practices. This paper asserts that in establishing these linkages, education is implicated as both a conduit for harm and a pathway for advancing trans epistemic justice.
