Making Student Employment More Impactful through Conversation and Reflection
Amanda Puffett; Matthew D. Pistilli; Katie M. Ansong
Assessment Update, v36 n6 p4, 12 2024
National research demonstrates that students working on campus remain enrolled at rates higher than their peers who do not work or work off-campus. Considered by many to be a High-Impact Practice (HIP) (McClellan, Creager, and Savoca 2018), the student employment experience is an integral part of students' education, growth, and development. GROW®, Gaining Reflections on Work, is a nationally proven model developed by the University of Iowa and implemented by more than 150 institutions in an effort to enhance the hourly student employment experience. Iowa State University's (ISU) implementation, Cy™ GROW, follows these programs and encourages students to reflect on the tasks they have completed and begin to link those experiences to potential applications in the workplace once they graduate from ISU. Reflecting on and identifying the relevance of experiences are two hallmarks of HIPs (Kuh, O'Donnell, and Reed 2013). Combined with the other quality aspects of HIPs that are inherent in many hourly student employment positions at ISU, the advent of Cy GROW brings the opportunity for more students to engage in a high-impact experience while enrolled at ISU.
