A Narrative Study on How Fraternal Membership Informs Bi/Pan/Poly Sexual Identity Development
Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice, v61 n5 p667-680 2024
Scholarship on how fraternities inform members' sexual identity development is mixed, showcasing the harmful ways these groups affect queer members as well as highlighting the potential they have to be affirming. This narrative inquiry study sought to contribute to this literature by spotlighting the stories of 8 members who identified as bisexual/pansexual/polysexual. Findings demonstrated how fraternal membership: a) facilitated liberatory firsts; b) exposed members to hypermasculine, heteronormative contexts; and c) led members to manage monosexism/biphobia.
