Imagining Futures for Communication Education: Health Communication Campaigns as Pedagogical
Sergio Fernando Juárez; C. Kyle Rudick
Communication Education, v73 n4 p449-451 2024
Health campaigns have long been viewed from a transmissive lens. That is, typically campaigns assume that medical experts, government officials, and nonprofit organizations have information about some form of care, prevention, or cure, which is then disseminated to those in need of their direction. Health communication scholars have started to articulate the importance of relationships, structure, and culture in developing campaigns. Central to this approach is the belief that health campaigns are not simply an individual or behavioral phenomenon; rather, they are embedded in a space, time and context that shapes and constrains health action. In this article, the authors recognize the importance of pedagogy within health campaigns. Communication and instruction literature, which aims to foster learning, can significantly enhance health campaigns by offering new ways of informing and persuading the public.
