Developing Character through Critical Reflection
Barbara Jacoby
Journal of College and Character, v25 n4 p371-378 2024
Every college and university has as one of its clear purposes to develop students' critical thinking. This is, of course, essential. However necessary critical thinking is as a goal of higher education, it is not sufficient on its own. Critical reflection is a vital complement to critical thinking. Critical reflection enables students to insightfully examine their lives and to develop the character that makes their lives worth living for themselves and the world. This article explores how to engage students in critical reflection for values clarification, deepening learning through community engagement, and preparing them to be critically reflective professionals.
