Systematic Literature Review Enhances the Professional Development of Undergraduate Students
Nicholas W. Gengler; Miguel A. Acevedo
NACTA Journal, v67 p125-138 2023
The measured value of systematic literature review and research synthesis for contributing to the professional development of undergraduate students is largely unknown. As such, opportunities to develop these skills may be underutilized by educators. Using quantitative and qualitative methods we assessed how the level of participation in an out-of-classroom volunteer opportunity that focused on research synthesis could enhance the professional development of undergraduate students in ecology. We found improvements in participants' motivation to pursue careers in ecology and self-confidence as researchers, which are two key aspects of professional development. Systematic literature review and research synthesis are critical skills for success in environmental sciences, yet opportunities to develop these skills may be scarce. Developing these skills can impart significant benefits to the professional development of undergraduate students, and educators should not hesitate to offer opportunities based on literature review and research synthesis.
