A Playful Approach to Building Student Agency on Climate Change

This article discusses iBiome-Wetland, the first educational game from the author's company Springbay Studio. It invites children to build virtual wetland ecosystems, learn about 54 species living in wetlands, experience biodiversity, and conduct experiments to find out how food webs work. The game has received five awards from prestigious organizations, including the Best App for Teaching and Learning from the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). The success of the iBiome games aligns with findings from the United Nations Environmental Programme's report, "Playing for the Planet: How Video Games Can Deliver for People and the Environment." The report highlighted that video games have the potential to trigger huge directional shifts in thinking and in action.
