Keys to Anatomical Potential: Exploring Turnout
Danae McWatt
Dance Education in Practice, v10 n4 p27-32 2024
High school dance students are at an age where they can process challenging technical concepts with an anatomical lens. One of these concepts is turnout, an essential joint action used in a variety of dance contexts and disciplines. As this joint action is not always well explained or well understood, many students try it without adequate guidance and could suffer from stifled progress and injuries. The author decided to separate the mechanics from the rest of the technique, allowing her to workshop and take a microscopic view of the joint action to make it its own lesson. The author tackles turnout directly with her high school students before she teaches the style that requires it, not ballet exclusively. Dance students are exposed to turnout using an unorthodox approach that employs the identification of scientific information while they are physically prepared with engaging visual aids or props. They emerge confident in applying their newfound knowledge to their dance studies. This method inspires students to apply creative problem solving to other potentially confusing movement mechanics used in dance related to muscle engagement, effective alignment, and kinesthetic awareness.
