A Brief Measure of Attitudes toward Resident Advisors
Shyneice C. Porter; Leonard Newman
College Student Journal, v50 n1 p107-111 2016
Resident Advisors (RAs) play important roles in the lives of students at many colleges and universities. Negative attitudes toward RAs are not uncommon, though, and such attitudes can dissuade students from applying to serve in the role and can undermine RAs' abilities to effectively carry out their responsibilities. A brief, easy to administer, face valid, and internally reliable measure of student attitudes toward RAs is introduced. The measure was found to be related to students' interest in becoming an RA and to their expectations about how RAs respond to rule violations. The measure developed and described here could be particularly useful for offices of residence life, student affairs departments, and other campus units responsible for overseeing and evaluating students' experiences in residence halls.
