MSW Social Work Direct Practice Texts: Visibilities and Invisibilities
Jill G. Grant; Maurissa Hastings
Journal of Teaching in Social Work, v44 n5 p551-567 2024
Textbooks used in MSW Direct Practice courses in Canada were analyzed using Critical Discourse Analysis, with a particular focus on content related to social work relationships. Positive aspects of relationships were discussed in more depth than negative aspects, little information about boundaries and confidentiality was found, and there was a decided lack of depth in content. The study highlighted the need for more depth in teaching about relationships in social work practice. Recommendations for adding more depth are included.
