Unlocking Literacy: Strategies to Teach Reading to Dyslexic Students
Gulzar Babool
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v36 n3 p44-53 2024
Despite abundant research on effective reading instruction, many teachers struggle to meet the diverse needs of their students, particularly those with dyslexia. Even though reading is an essential skill for academic success, according to the 2019 "Nation's Report Card" published by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), only 35 percent of fourth-grade students nationwide could read proficiently, a decrease from the 37 percent reported in 2017. This article explores ways to integrate Montessori strategies into reading instruction to enhance teacher preparation and support students with dyslexia. Gulzar Babool will describe seven components that build educators' confidence in effectively providing reading instruction to students with dyslexia, including but not limited to teacher training, adaptability, and collaboration with professionals. By synthesizing Montessori philosophy and evidence-based reading instruction, educators can create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that empowers all students to achieve reading proficiency.
