Learning Center Administrator Competencies
Joan Giblin; JoJo Jacobson
Learning Assistance Review, v29 n1 p129-160 2024
Learning centers and tutoring programs serve a unique function as they are situated between academic and student affairs. Despite their importance, little research has focused on the key knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies required for success as learning center directors. This qualitative study addressed this gap by exploring critical KSAs through semi-structured interviews with 22 participants who currently serve as tutor supervisors. Key themes emerged, including data-based advocacy, communication, financial management, supervision, and adaptability. The study identifies the essential skills required for learning center directors to succeed, emphasizing the intricate and multidimensional nature of their roles in promoting student success and academic achievement.
