Jian-Jun Chen-Edmund; Marc Harroo; Dylan Reed-Fuglestad
Music Educators Journal, v110 n4 p57-59 2024
Online learning has become one of the most important new trends in the past few years, and there is increasing demand for music teachers to adapt. Current research regarding online music-learning (OML) environments reveals accessibility issues, lack of engagement, and limited social interaction. In this article, accessibility refers to the ease with which students and teachers can utilize an online platform to share and understand classroom content. Accessibility limitations can increase feelings of frustration, inadequacy, or even disenchantment, all of which are threats to students' well-being and academic health. To foster classroom environments where students feel comfortable and supported, the authors have compiled a series of practical suggestions for increasing accessibility, promoting engagement, and boosting social interaction within an OML environment and preparing for successful online performances.
