Explore Nature Place-Based Learning: Take Your Students and Your Standards Outdoors!
Geography Teacher, v21 n3 p126-130 2024
Nature place-based learning (NPBL) is one way to sustain people and places at risk of environmental degradation while engaging students in authentic learning experiences, connecting their work to global efforts and inviting students to realize their collective impact. NPBL offers an opportunity for students to apply interdisciplinary literacies while developing a sense of self in relation to their physical spaces and the communities they inhabit. Despite the many competing demands educators face, it is possible to successfully adhere to a rigorous standards-aligned curriculum and engage students in NPBL. With many ways to engage students in outdoor learning, the author's experiences with NPBL might look different than another educator's experiences. However, if educators have an interest in NPBL and are not sure where to start, the author offers some initial advice to educators: (1) Start small as you head outdoors, but be intentional; (2) Find your community; (3) Connect with professionals working in related fields; (4) Enjoy the adventure, as greater investment equals greater reward; and (5) Be open to the possibilities -- don't be afraid to think big. Students thrive when presented with meaningful learning opportunities. As the authors states, take your students and your standards outdoors!
