Diving into Diversity: Integrating Intercultural Competence into a PETE Curriculum
Claire Mowling; Josephine Prado
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v37 n5 p3-12 2024
This article explores the integration of intercultural competence into one physical education teacher education (PETE) curriculum to address the increasing number of culturally and linguistically diverse children in physical education. Highlighting a potential lack of PETE student preparation, the article recommends adopting a framework based on Deardorff's process model of intercultural competence. The proposed approach spans four methods courses, aiming to embed culturally relevant pedagogy. Emphasizing the importance of fostering culturally responsive and inclusive physical educators, the framework underscores the need for teacher education programs to enhance intercultural competence, thereby improving the quality and impact of PETE programs.
