What I Learned Working with My School Psychologist
Rick Yang
Communique, v53 n1 p6 2024
Engaging in mental health advocacy as a high schooler has granted the author the unique opportunity to observe some of the most inspiring manifestations of hope that humanity has to offer. Simultaneously, it has opened their my eyes to the systemic underrepresentation and misrepresentation of youth. The author has been mentored by their school psychologist, an active member of NASP, to liaise between the mental health awareness club and the psychology team. School psychologists are uniquely positioned to witness the day-to-day challenges and triumphs of young individuals navigating mental health issues. By collaborating closely with youth, psychologists can gain valuable insights into the effectiveness of current programs and identify gaps in service delivery. This approach, in turn, fosters a sense of ownership and empowerment among the youth as they see their ideas and feedback being taken seriously.
