There is a lack of evidence-based, culturally relevant instructional approaches, especially in writing instruction, that are designed to meet deaf and hard of hearing students' diverse language needs. This article describes the three main guiding principles and two supporting principles of the Strategic and Interactive Writing Instruction (SIWI)--a research-based framework designed for deaf students that can be applied at any level and with any genre of writing. Researchers have found strong evidence of language and writing growth in students who engage in SIWI, although SIWI professional development is essential for effective implementation of the program.
