Supporting the Development of Senior Secondary Students' Mathematical Knowledge Using Procedural Flowcharts

Developing students' mathematical knowledge is the key focus of stakeholders involved in mathematics education. At the senior secondary level, for students' undertaking calculus-focused courses, teachers expect students to be fluent in applying procedures related to junior level content and understand the nature of mathematics as a web of connected concepts and procedures. The author's expectation as a senior secondary mathematics teacher was for students to be fluent in applying and connecting procedures taught at junior levels or earlier in a unit. Procedural and conceptual knowledge and fluency are key in the overall development of students' mathematical knowledge and competency. The purpose of this paper is to share the author's experiences and demonstrate how procedural flowcharts can be a resource that can be used to support students' mathematics understanding and fluency. The visual nature of procedural flowcharts makes it easy to process and they provide timely feedback that in turn help students engage with mathematics problems meaningfully. Including procedural flowcharts when problem-solving have supported the author's students and themselves in communicating efficiently about how to solve the problem.
