Connecting across Borders by Reading without Walls: Using Non-Prose Narratives to Multiply Multicultural Class Content
Karly Marie Grice; Rachel L. Rickard Rebellino; Christine N. Stamper
English Journal, v107 n1 p48-53 2017
Texts that challenge the narrative status quo -- from introducing new ways of authoring to showcasing historically overlooked experiences - have garnered increasing notoriety, specifically through literary prizing. Altogether, these books not only diversified the form of the awards' histories but also the characters, content, and authors. As children's and young adult literature scholars and educators of preservice teachers, the authors believe that these literary winds of change -- specifically, the emphasis on diverse formats -- might be just the gust needed to blow down the walls potentially created by turning to canonical literature that presents a largely homogeneous experience. The authors suggest that by turning attention to a curriculum including non-prose narratives in young adult literature, classrooms can become places to broaden and deepen students' engagement with multicultural characters and topics. Within this article, the authors explain how form meets function and breaks down walls, first by discussing the specifics of the non-prose forms and then by providing several texts that can be introduced to adolescent readers.
