(Re)Writing Reality: Using Science Fiction to Analyze the World
S. R. Toliver; Keith Miller
English Journal, v108 n3 p51-59 2019
When a student in a community-based writing program asked to write science fiction (SF), rather than a personal essay, he prompted the staff to expand the scope of the program's curriculum. This article describes how SF became another avenue for discussing community change. However, instead of just evaluating their worlds and writing about what was currently happening, these students used SF writing to develop imaginative responses to systemic social problems. They were unbound by realism and able to use their imaginations to re(write) their worlds and think through the implications of current societal practices. Students deserve to experiment with ideas that explore the uncharted areas of possible futures; they deserve to travel to lands that yet to be found; they deserve to investigate their world by going beyond the known territories of traditional genres of writing. In doing so, the learning experience for students, teachers, and families is enriched, pushing what's possible and redefining what hope and social change can mean for all.
