Objective: We wanted to identify factors associated with pre-nursing student retention and success at a small, rural two-year institution in South Carolina. Method: Transcript analysis generated a dataset for pre-nursing students (N = 125). Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze high school and university data. Results: Our research identified predictors associated with student retention and/or success: high school performance, college readiness, and first semester performance. Ethnicity was not associated with student retention and success. Two intervention programs were evaluated: Opportunity Scholars Program, or OSP (a TRIO program), and University 101. Conclusions: The results for high school performance and pre-nursing student outcomes suggested that this predictor may be useful for identifying at-risk students. First semester performance was strongly associated with retention and success, which illustrated the importance of students' first semester at college. UNIV 101 does not appear to significantly improve pre-nursing students' retention or success. Student participation in OSP activities was associated with retention and success. Contributions: Our research has successfully identified predictors associated with student retention and success and evaluated two interventions. As a result, we demonstrated the value of collecting and analyzing student data at an institution.
