Teaching Philosophies for Dance Educators
Miriam Giguere
Dance Education in Practice, v10 n1 p2-5 2024
Many job postings in postsecondary and PK--12 dance education will ask applicants for a statement of teaching philosophy. This is most commonly a one- to two-page written statement that summarizes your beliefs about teaching and learning that underpin the way you go about structuring learning activities, curriculum, student engagement, and classroom management. A statement of teaching philosophy is also a common part of a tenure dossier, so dance educators engaged in the tenure process, as well as educators seeking positions, will need to prepare a statement of teaching philosophy. This statement is more than just an employment document, however. It provides all educators with an opportunity to clarify what they fundamentally believe about their role as a teacher and their goals for student outcomes.
