The "Familismo" Coaching Model: A Values-Based Coaching Framework for Latino Caregivers

Families play a central role in EI services for young children with disabilities (Division for Early Childhood [DEC], 2014). Family coaching in early childhood is a core piece to providing services for young children with disabilities and their families (Rush & Shelden, 2011). It is an identified best practice method of service delivery that embodies the family-centered model and increases family capacity (DEC, 2014). Despite evidence demonstrating the positive outcomes of caregiver and family coaching (Lorio et al., 2020), literature on coaching and family involvement within a cultural framework is limited. One group of interest is the Latino community. When it comes to encountering large systems, such as education or health care, Latino families often report feeling unequal in their partnerships with their children's service team (Ramirez, 2003), signaling a significant cultural gap and lack of responsive services. Family culture, beliefs, language, and practice affect how they interact with their children and accept and participate in EI services (Mitter et al., 2019). Daily routines and activities, along with developmental expectations, vary widely across cultures. Yet much of the extant research on autism and early childhood is primarily done with White children and families (DuBay et al., 2018), leaving gaps on how best to support families from a variety of different cultures and linguistic makeups. This article will outline the concept for a three-part coaching approach that leverages the strengths and needs of the Latino population, as derived from the literature on family-centered practice, evidence-based practices, and the core values of the Latino culture.
