Post-COVID-19 Music Classrooms: Music Teachers' Beliefs about Classroom Management
Jennifer L. Gee
Contributions to Music Education, v49 p125-146 2024
The purpose of this study was to examine K-12 music teachers' beliefs pertaining to classroom management after the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants consisted of 567 K-12 music teachers currently teaching within the United States. They responded to a modified version of the "Classroom Management Beliefs Survey" developed by Kwok (2021). The findings revealed that participants approached classroom management from both organizational and environmental perspectives, while recognizing the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on their management practices in music classrooms. Creating a safe learning environment for all students, irrespective of individual differences, and fostering a community of care emerged as the most significant aspects of classroom management for both elementary and secondary elementary music classrooms. In addition, gender and teaching experience had a significant effect on participants' indicated level of importance for various aspects of classroom management in an elementary and secondary music classroom. The implications of these findings for the field of music education are also discussed.
