Tribal College Journal of American Indian Higher Education, v35 n4 2024
Cankdeska Cikana Community College (CCCC) in North Dakota is a tribal college serving the Spirit Lake Dakota reservation community. CCCC was chartered by the Spirit Lake Tribe in 1974 as Little Hoop Community College. Like all academic institutions, CCCC received funding from the federal government, as well as a few private sources, to keep the college operating during the pandemic (spring 2020 to spring 2023). As the pandemic ramped up in the spring of 2020, CCCC faculty members were given two weeks to transition to distance education. Fortunately, CCCC had implemented an online learning management system (Moodle) several years prior, so the college was somewhat prepared. The transition was relatively seamless for most faculty members. CCCC provided faculty with research-based teaching strategies and practices for distance education that were meant to close equity gaps and improve student achievement and engagement. This article examines how CCCC was able to provide technology and economic support during the pandemic.
