Mutual Aid as Project and Practice: A Pandemic Collaboration between an Elementary School Teacher and a Pre-Service Teaching Professor
Jen Bradley; Priya Dieterich
Schools: Studies in Education, v21 n1 p9-30 2024
Grounded in the works of Dean Spade, Alice Wong, Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, Gholdy Muhammad, Innosanto Nagara, Lilian Katz, and John Dewey, this article chronicles the journey of two teachers: a third/fourth-grade teacher and her former college professor's early childhood class. Guided by the Project Approach, we found hope and comfort in trying to cope with the early months of the pandemic in our experiential co-investigations of mutual aid in each (suddenly virtual) classroom. Although this article provides a snapshot of a unique moment in time, we argue that educating both our students and ourselves about mutual aid is an unfinished and essential project in creating a just society.
