Teaching in Contentious Times: Education Culture Wars, Challenges, and Possibilities
Amira Proweller; Karen Monkman
Schools: Studies in Education, v21 n1 p42-69 2024
Public schools are currently at the center of a set of multifaceted culture wars around questions about who decides the purpose of and sets the agenda for what should be taught in our nation's schools. Although culture wars are not new, today's conflicts are distinguished by their intensity and hostility directed toward marginalized and minoritized groups and educators. Legal restrictions on teaching about issues related to race, racism, sexual orientation, and gender identity have been implemented in several states across the nation, with direct consequences for teachers, school leaders, and students. As a democratic institution, public schooling is under attack, and educators are faced with having to reconcile these challenges with their purpose to prepare youth for full participation in a democracy. Despite the challenges that today's culture wars present, they hold the promise of opportunity for educators to reclaim public schooling as a vital democratic space.
