Idea Bank: Placing the Music at the Center of Music Theory Courses
Frank Abrahams
Music Educators Journal, v110 n3 p16-19 2024
Many music theory courses make use of a textbook with an accompanying anthology of musical examples. Some anthologies include recorded examples, and some do not. Many books address the topics of eighteenth-century theory with exercises for the student to complete at the end of each chapter. This article proposes a music theory pedagogy that honors the principles of constructivist learning theory with actual music at the center. The pedagogy is student-centered and engages students in active problem solving and problem posing as they negotiate the principles of music theory, with students working inside a makerspace composing music and experimenting with found physical and computer-generated sounds.
