Unpacking the Expertise of Teaching Mathematics: Passion for Mathematics Is Infectious
Ben Zunica
Australian Mathematics Education Journal, v5 n3 p12-13 2023
Across nearly 20 years working as a secondary mathematics teacher, the author noticed two overarching goals that most teachers of mathematics consider to be important in their practice: (1) students knowing and understanding the content; and (2) students engaging with the learning and enjoying their time in class. However, in practice, attaining the second goal first makes it much more likely the first goal will be achieved. This column outlines what has been learned about engaging students and helping them to enjoy their learning in mathematics with the hope that this helps invigorate the practice of those teachers.
